Addressing Race and Racial Trauma in the Therapeutic Setting

When our aim is to work from an anti-oppressive, anti-racism and social justice lens, it’s vital we engage in conversation to collaboratively strive to understand our our social location, our privileged and subjugated identities, as well as that of those we serve.

Research clearly indicates that learning how to address issues of race in a therapeutic setting, largely depends upon the ability to safely, openly, and honestly discuss issues in a supervisory context, as well as situations that challenge our comfort zones, our biases, and allow for movement and growth as a clinician. In this space we’ll commit to allowing a safe space for discomfort to learn from one another.

In this months session we will be exploring our location of self and the identities in our group. We will also begin to discuss the creation of a JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) action plan as a clinical social worker or therapist.
