Self Assessment - 2 PART!

It is important that a routine part of our practice is our own self-assessment. Reviewing the sessions we engage in with clients, reviewing any counter-transference that might be arising, and also formally doing a review of our learnings and areas of improvement. If we feel “we have arrived” we should see this as a red flag. We want to have confidence in the work we do, we want to be aware of our competence, but we must remember that we’re always going to be students in this field and doing temperature checks on our work is vital.

This is a time and place where we really have to leave perfectionism as the door and give ourselves grace in taking an honest look at our work. Finding areas of improvement is a sign of awareness and potential for growth.

This month we’ll primarily focus on areas of improvement - next month, we’ll be merging this will our strengths, unique gifts and natural skills.

So here are some questions that we’ll be exploring this month as a group together:

1) Where might your practice be more colonized? Blind spots of creating an anti-oppressive practice?

  • How is culture, history, and ancestry honored?

  • Are you healing modalities rooted in white male mainstream culture?

  • When you access continuing education are you receiving a diverse education?

  • Have you heard of JEDI, DEI plans? If so, are they incorporated into your practice?

  • Do you know your areas of privilege or marginalized identity? Do you know this of your clients?

2) What strengths do you have that might mask needs, areas of improvement or blind spots?

3) What is an area of your practice you have not assessed lately?

4) What areas do you tend towards feeling reactionary with clients?

5) What areas do you “feel” less confident, or even “less than”? How do you see building this confidence or setting a boundary?

6) With regards to the logistics of the work…where do you see needing to improve?

  • paperwork

  • maintaining boundaries

  • structure of visits

  • working overtime

7) As social workers, we have an obligation to deeply understand and connect micro through macro work? How does this look in your practice?

I look forward to seeing you all there!
