Diagnosing

In this months group supervision we will be exploring what it really means to diagnose. We will navigate the current systems that exist to assess mental health, with a close look at the DSM. What aspects can potentially provide support to our clients and what aspects are potentially harmful. We want to have a good awareness of our ethics around diagnosing as well as the spectrum of help vs. hindrance these tools present. As clinicians we hold a great amount of power and must be diligent to uncover where we engage in systems that have roots in oppression both in the past and current state.

Some things you can review:

  • An article discussing the false positives problem in the DSM-5

  • If you don’t have a DSM, here’s the APA DSM Table of Contents for some context

  • Here are online assessment measures from the APA on the DSM-5-TR

  • An article discussing the newest edition of the DSM-5-TR

What you will need to bring:

  • You!

I look forward to seeing you all there!
