If we’re providing clinical supervision or if we’re receiving clinical supervision, it is paramount that we have the training we need so we provide and receive the best clinical supervision and we’re actively engaged in deepening how impactful clinical supervision can be. All too often our supervisors may have some training, but as supervisees, we’re not really given a clear view of what we can expect and what we should expect of our supervisors. Here we fill in this gap.
Clinical Supervision is also a practice that we see many providing, because they’ve been a manager before or they’ve supervised individuals in the organization they work for. The problem, is “clinical” supervision is VERY different from typical employment supervision or management. As supervisors we want to ensure that we are providing ethically sound clinical supervision and we’re understanding our biases within our roles. As supervisees, we want to ensure that we’re getting the most out of our clinical supervision and that we are safe to openly explore our practice and discuss challenges as they arise.
Objectives:
Identify the role and responsibilities of the clinical supervisor, as well as the role and responsibilities of the clinical supervisee
Understanding the importance of creating a supervision agreement and how to construct a viable agreement
Compare the various frameworks for supervision and theoretical approaches
Identify and evaluate sources of liability in the supervision process and relationship
Describe the power dynamics and differentials between the supervisor and supervisee to determine an ethical fit
Contrast the necessity and differences between individual supervision and group supervision
Establish the ways in which regulation and ethics boards overlay standards for the supervisory process
Describe structure of supervision sessions to ensure appropriate review of supervision topics and appropriate documentation
