Ecomaps and Genograms

One of those tools we learn in our masters programs, but then they seem to slip between the cracks and we don’t pick it up again. So why is that?? We’re not using them for a reason…so what is that reason? Do they feel too formal? Do they feel dated? Do they box people in too much? Do they feel cumbersome? Do they impact the flow of our sessions?

All of these things are very legitimate rationals for why we’re not using ecomaps and genograms and there could be more.

But that doesn’t mean that these tools can’t be helpful. In fact, they can be extremely helpful. These tools can allow people to take the deeply complex dynamics in their life and make them visual, make them tangible. They can connect with people that are more visual learners, visual processors, creative learners. These tools can be a phenomenal tool in visualizing what clients are feeling, acknowledging their cultural framework, validating their history, their lived experiences, the epigenetics that impact their life and the places they can affect change.

So what do we do? WE flip the script. WE make the tools work for the client, vs. trying to make the client shift for the tool. We make the tool something that actually works…so it’s not cumbersome, it is new and fresh, it’s appropriately informal and it doesn’t box people in.

We’ll discuss how we can do this, leveraging our own creativity on how to make these tools work for our practice and work for our clients. It’ll be fun!!!

I look forward to seeing you all there!
